Cutting-Edge Platelet Therapy is the New Healing Option for Elite Athletes. Now you can benefit at CTM.

At the Center, we have pioneered the use of prolotherapy using Platelet Rich Plasma matrix grafts, or PRP for short. Since 2006, we have successfully used a concentrate of platelets harvested from patient’s own blood to treat everything from acute and chronic athletic injuries to cartilage destroying osteoarthritis of the knees.

Many people first heard of PRP prolo last spring when Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Hines Ward had PRP to his injured knee and was able to start in Super Bowl XLlll. Others heard how Dodgers pitcher Takashi Saito used PRP to heal his elbow rather than go through season-ending surgery. Mets All-Star center fielder Carlos Beltran had career saving PRP prolotherapy on his knee, and Mets teammate Jose Reyes used PRP prolotherapy to recover from a small tear in his right hamstring tendon in early June ‘09.

First-hand Experience!
The last weekend of September 2008, I had a kite boarding injury that tore up the ACL of my left knee. But I never considered surgery. Instead, after 4 injections of a concentrate of my own blood platelets and 6 months of healing time, I was able to resume full use of my knee in May, just in time for my best windsurfing season ever. I owe it all to prolotherapy using Platelet Rich Plasma matrix grafts.

Clinical Research.
I’ve been conducting clinical research on PRP prolotherapy for 3 years now, and my experience after treating hundreds of patients is that PRP prolotherapy can have truly miraculous results. The procedure, which takes less than an hour, is designed to jump-start the body’s ability to heal itself with few side effects or risks. 4-6 ounces (120-180 ml) of the patient’s blood are processed to harvest concentrated platelets into 15-20 ml of PRP, which is injected into the injured area. Platelets are a natural source of the body’s own growth factors, which recruit other cells to enhance tissue regeneration and healing. Growth factors are multiplied in PRP, which can have a concentration of platelets four to ten times the normal level in blood. Robert Monaco is the Rutgers team physician and a clinical associate at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he conducts research on PRP. He has found that for acute injuries, ones that have just occurred, healing rates can be accelerated by 30 to 50 percent.

What kinds of injuries can PRP be used in?
Medical researchers are reporting remarkable results using autologous PRP in the treatment of common injuries, including tendinosis, the regeneration of cartilage in osteoarthritis of the thumbs, knees and hips, and in non-surgical repair of rotator cuff tears. Published studies show restoration and smoothing of roughened cartilage, improved range of motion, and resolution of pain in osteoarthritis of hips, knees and shoulders. Many other conditions respond to prolotherapy with PRP, including injuries to the back, neck, jaw, elbows, shoulders, hands, hips, knees, ankles and feet. The Weight-Loss Program That Can Change Your Future

Finally, after a long search, we have developed a reliable weight loss plan that really works and fulfills our commitment to larger health goals. We know how well it works because we followed it ourselves, and we’ve coached dozens of patients through the program and seen amazingly consistent, positive results in everyone. Not only do people shed unwanted pounds very quickly, but we see blood pressure and cholesterol levels drop to normal. Weight remains at a new set-point, and it helps us achieve the optimal body mass index that good long-term health is built upon.

Many people have experience with dieting where they take pounds off, only to gain back the weight they lost, plus a few more pounds. Eventually, this yo-yo effect creates a metabolism and weight set-point that is stuck on “famine” mode, where the body holds stubbornly onto all of its weight. What makes our diet different from other weight loss programs is that it opens the gates to weight loss again, and helps us achieve a whole new set-point.

The key to our success is daily injections of Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (HCG). HCG is a hormone naturally produced by a pregnant woman’s placenta, where it helps to calibrate the hypothalamus, which is a master gland in the endocrine system. It was discovered decades ago that the HCG hormone has a direct relationship to mobilizing abnormal fat stores in the body. It works as effectively on males as it does on females.

In addition to daily injections, the program requires you follow a very specific whole food diet. On this diet, people lose an average of ¾ lb. per day. This is followed by a maintenance phase, where additional foods are slowly added back in, all the while watching for any changes in the last injection weight. It’s as simple as that! By the time the maintenance phase is reached, people know how to eat to keep their weight steady, and to achieve the optimal nutritional status that supports vitality and robust health.

“This diet has changed my future. I have spent years struggling to get my cholesterol and weight under control with a healthy diet and exercise, only to watch my lab results and my scale prove that I was not  succeeding. My cholesterol, triglycerides and metabolic syndrome continued to get worse. Now, with the easy success of a healthier weight, an active lifestyle, and improved lab results I have proven to myself that I can change my future”, Betsy told us this several months after completing the program.

Jane, who at age 60 was able to lose 30 lbs in 40 days, was delighted to find that the “skinny clothes” she kept at the bottom of her closet were even too big for her now.

Another formerly obese patient, Liz, who said she NEVER thought that she would see 125 lbs. on the scale again, wished she had waited till she was done with the diet in order to shop for clothes, because the smaller clothes she bought for herself in the early stages of the diet were already too big for her.

Joe, who had failed to lose weight after a $25,000 lap-band procedure, lost 40 lbs, on his first round, and 30 lbs. on his second round, and says that this HCG Diet is the only thing he has been able to be faithful to in his life, besides his wife!

If you are overweight, have heart disease or Type II Diabetes in your family, you are at risk for developing any of the great American diseases of aging, such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, hormone imbalances or fatty liver disease, and you are an excellent candidate for this program. One of the things we like so much about this program is that it gets you out of the active health risk categories so quickly and puts you on the road to health management without all the excess weight. It gives results quickly, helps you feel better about yourself , and gets you back in the game of life. Call CTM for a health evaluation to determine if this amazing diet program is for you.

Let Your Body Speak with Muscle Reflex Testing

What do you do when you have uncomfortable symptoms and laboratory testing isn’t helping with the diagnosis? Or when the best-chosen treatments aren’t working, or your body reacts to the medicine you’re taking?

I recently completed training in a method of muscle reflex testing which aims to answer these questions. This intuitive testing has helped me identify the biggest stressors on my patients. Often these stressors are hidden, and block the body’s ability to accept another form of treatment until they are handled. I have found that the five biggest stressors on the body are chemicals, food allergies, heavy metals, scars, and immune challenges.

Muscle reflex testing taps into the strength of certain muscle groups, which are either strong or weak when challenged. Different reflex points are used to determine the relative strength of organs or glands. While muscle testing cannot be used exclusively or instead of laboratory diagnosis, it is a great resource to answer some of the mysteries that disrupt your body’s balance.

For example, I recently had a patient with sudden-onset swelling of the hands and feet. She had been to her primary care physician who ran thousands of dollars worth of tests, and all of them came back with normal results. We found through muscle reflex testing that “industrial chemicals” were a specific stressor on her body and were interfering with water regulation. She told me she had just put in new hardwood floors in the house and wasn’t opening the windows since it was so hot outside. I had her ventilate the house, gave her a toxin cleansing regime for 2 weeks, and all of her swelling went away.

Another patient was suffering from hot flashes and did not want to use hormone replacement. Her body tested positive to “fungal immune challenges”, and once we treated her immune system with anti-fungal medication, her hot flashes cleared. In both of these cases, muscle reflex testing was the key to helping me find the right treatment.

If you are curious about any medical mysteries in your life and want to let your body have a say, come in for muscle reflex testing and treatment.

Prolotherapy Prevents Surgery in Child Athletic Injuries

soccerNick developed severe pain in his knees and could no longer train with his high school team. Mary was very competitive in volleyball but developed severe pain in her foot that surgery had only worsened. Eric had been run down in a baseball game and had chronic ankle pain. David sprained his ankle in rugby and limped when he tried to run. What do these and many other high school athletes have in common? All are highly competitive athletes who risked being permanently disabled at a young age. And thanks to prolotherapy, all had complete resolution of their pain without surgery or expensive physical therapy.

With the increased intensity and demands of childhood athletics these days, orthopedists at leading medical centers are seeing soaring rates of childhood injuries to knees and other joints. Knee tears occur in younger and younger children, and as many as eight times more girls than boys are suffering tears to their knee ligaments.

Doctors have also learned that contact injuries are not the most common cause of knee injuries. It turns out ACL and meniscus tears occur more often from twisting and jumping. A child can be running and step in a hole, twisting a leg. Other times, a young athlete can tear an ACL or meniscus by coming down from a rebound in basketball or when accelerating and decelerating in a game. It seems that the best athletes are constantly at risk because of the intensity of training and play. Children as young as 9 are having ACL tears”.

Parents often give in to their child’s attitude of being “indestructible”, or worse, encourage their child to play through the pain, increasing the risk of further injury and the development of joint arthritis.

What can be done? Listen to your child and do not let them play through the pain and risk permanent injury and a lifetime of joint arthritis. Instead, bring your young athlete in for prolotherapy. Over the years I have treated many child athletes with prolotherapy, and have found that children are especially responsive to the natural growth and repair effects of prolotherapy.

Avoid Knee Replacement with PRP Prolotherapy

“Just come back in a year or so when the pain gets too bad to walk, and we can give you a new knee,” said Mary’s doctor. X-rays showed that her 70 year-old knee was wearing down to the bone. “In the meantime, just take more Advil to control the pain.”

But ibuprofen was not an option: it was too hard on her kidneys and caused her feet to hurt and swell up like balloons. And the idea of taking daily doses of something known to be toxic just didn’t sound like good medical advice.

Eight months later Mary was walking up stairs without a second thought. She had just returned from visiting her sister’s in Arizona where they were able to take short day hikes, something that would have been impossible just one year ago. “My friends thought I was crazy to put off surgery, but now they see that there is another option. I’m so very glad I tried prolotherapy which allowed my knees to heal without surgery.”

Since 2006, my colleagues and I have developed and tested a cost-effective method of harvesting PRP, or Platelet Rich Plasma. We developed this method of using PRP concentrates in prolotherapy because the science of PRP is so compelling. We have just completed gathering our data documenting the effectiveness of this method and are preparing our paper for publication.

I have used PRP effectively to regenerate worn out hip and knee joints in many of my patients. These results have been so compelling that I am convinced that we can prevent total knee replacement surgery in the majority of patients, provided they begin treatment before their joint degeneration is too advanced. I am collaborating with a colleague working in Argentina who will measure cartilage thickness before and after PRP therapy to document cartilage changes. Stay tuned for more information on these exciting developments by tracking Dr. Peterson’s blog, www.prolodoctor.wordpress.com.

Need Help with Letting Go and Getting a New Plan?
Get a Five Element Acupuncture Tune-Up for Fall and Winter.

Many of you are familiar with Dr. Horan’s practice of Five Element Acupuncture, which as part of its goal, seeks to align a person with the natural cycle of the seasons. In Chinese medicine, each season is associated with one of the five elements: metal, water, wood, fire, and earth. Each element is associated with some aspect of human health and experience in the larger cycle of life. One of the benefits of Five Element treatment is that you can have a “seasonal tune-up” to sharpen your attunement to your appropriate activity level and focus. This seasonal tune-up can make sure your life over-all is staying on track.

Fall is associated with the Metal element, which rules the lungs and large intestine organs, and governs the need for letting go. When the weather changes to cold and damp, the lungs are the most vulnerable to the climate change, and people become vulnerable to upper respiratory illnesses. In the Five Element perspective, as trees lose their leaves and life begins to contract, so must we release what is no longer needed, in order to clarify our values and create a space for what is to come in the future.

Without letting go of things both physically and psychically, we won’t have the room for bringing in new life in its place. What if you were grieving the loss of an old relationship too long and missed a new opportunity with someone right in front of you? A Five Element treatment can help bring you into the present moment to allow effective grieving for all things past, and moving on.

Winter is associated with the Water element, and rules the bladder, kidneys and adrenal glands. Winter is a time for reflection and focus. Winter is when earth’s forces are deep within. Just as nature pulls her attention down to her roots, so should our actions correspond to this principle. If you’re not “feeling your roots” in winter, and you keep your activity level as busy as you are in the summer, you will probably fail to regenerate your adrenal glands and drain the inner resources, and be prone to sleep disorders and loss of energy. A Five Element treatment in winter can help re-calibrate your adrenal glands. Winter is also the season for reflecting on what is working well in your life. It is from this reflective place that we come up with our next year’s best plan for creating what we want and having the energy to actually put that plan into action when spring comes.

Don’t miss the opportunity to strengthen your body’s vital force and to live the biggest life you can create. Call for your Five Element Seasonal Tune-Ups for Fall and Winter today with Dr. Horan.

Ibuprofen Hurts Exercise, Toxic to Athletes

As an “older” athlete, I’m often asked what I do to control pain so that I can exercise. My answer is usually “What pain?”

I’ve known lots of people who refer to Advil as vitamin “A”, and I even know a group of windsurfing dentists who go by the moniker “Club Advil”. As doctors and members of the bio-medical elite, they should know better.

Maybe it’s just good luck (I doubt it, I’ve broken more bones than I care to count), or possibly my attitude (not really, I’m just as big a whiner as the next bloke), but I generally do not experience pain related to exercise.

I avoid NSAIDS because as it turns out, ibuprofen and other NSAIDS are no friend to those who exercise. Decades of research have shown that while these drugs control pain, usual doses of NSAIDS will interrupt normal collagen formation, and can literally stop the process of tendon and ligament repair. In addition to inhibiting the very repair needed after wear-and-tear athletics, ibuprofen actually increases exercise inflammation.

David Nieman studied the effect of NSAIDS on endurance runners at the Human Performance Laboratory at the North Carolina Research Campus. He found that runners who’d popped over-the-counter ibuprofen pills before and during a race were found to have a higher inflammation response afterward than the runners who had skipped the NSAIDS. Regular ibuprofen users also showed signs of kidney impairment and, both before and after the race, of low-level endotoxemia, a condition in which bacteria leak from the colon into the bloodstream, known to cause cartilage and joint degeneration. This is nothing new. Other studies have also shown that taking the usual doses of NSAIDS will interrupt normal collagen formation, and can literally stop the process of tendon and ligament repair.

An article from the NY Times points out just how bad an idea it is to take ibuprofen. You can read the article on my blog: www.prolodoctor.wordpress.com.
