Prolotherapy for Joint Pain Relief

What is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy is defined in Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary as "The rehabilitation of an incompetent structure such as a ligament or tendon, by the induced proliferation of new cells." It was developed over fifty years ago as a natural non-surgical method of assisting the body in healing injured tendons and ligaments.  Prolotherapy helps your body make new cells, which strengthen lax or torn tendons and ligaments. (Ligaments are the tough tissues which connect bones to bones, and tendons are the tough tissue which connect muscles to bones).

What health conditions is Prolotherapy used for?

  • Knee pain
  • Neck pain
  • Low back pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Ankle pain
  • Tennis/Golf elbow

How many treatments will I need until I feel better?

The number of treatments is dependent on the extent and location of injury, as well as the age, immune status, and nutritional reserves of the patient. The threshold for improvement in most people is about 4-6 sessions. Dr. Noel Peterson will discuss with you the various factors that can help speed up the healing time.

What can I expect when I come in for an appointment?

On your initial visit with Dr. Noel Peterson, you will be assessed for the appropriateness of regenerative therapy. He will discuss the following with you:

  • Current symptoms
  • Current medications, both prescribed and over-the-counter
  • Current nutritional supplements
  • Past and/or current lab results

Dr. Peterson will also perform a physical examination of the affected joints and review your prior medical records, including x-rays, CAT scans, and MRI reports if available. Although the majority of patients will not require further tests, he may recommend additional testing to rule out nutritional deficiencies or hormone imbalances that may be contributing to your symptoms.

After a complete evaluation, you will receive your first prolotherapy treatment and other appropriate physical therapies. At the end of your visit, you will receive recommendations in one or more of the following areas to enhance the regeneration of joint tissue and improve joint mobility:

  • Supplements
  • Foods and Medications to Avoid
  • Additional Lab Tests
  • Adjunctive Therapies
